3 sentenced to life for rape, murder in Barisal

BARISAL: A tribunal here on Wednesday sentenced three people to life terms in prison and fined them Tk 50,000 each for killing a teenage girl after violating her in Ujirpur upazila in 2000, reports UNB.
The lifers are Swapan Hawlader, son of Rafikuddin Hawlader of Kawarekha area of Ujirpur upazila, Samir Haldar, son of Sukhmoy Haldar, and Gaurango Bairagi, son of Kanai Bairagi of the same area. The court also awarded the trio five years jail and fined them Tk 5,000 each for abducting the body. Besides, the prime accused Swapan was sentenced to 14 years jail and fined Tk 10,000 on another account. According to the prosecution, Roksana, 15, daughter of Kader Fakir of Kosba village in Gauranadi upazila of the district used to work as a housemaid at the house of Rafik Uddin at Kawarekha in Ujirpur upazila.
On the night of February 23, 200, Swapan, son of Rafik Uddin, took Roksana near a pond beside the house and he along with two others raped her in turn and later killed the girl.
Later, police recovered the body of Roksana from the toilet of neighbour Atul Halder's house on February 24.  On March 16 in the same year, the victim's brother Lalon Fakir filed a case against six people with Ujirpur Police Station.
Sub-inspector of Ujirpur Police Station Abdul Hakim submitted a charge-sheet against the six accused to a court on January 26, 2003.
After examining witnesses and documents, Judge of Barisal Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Sheikh Abu Taher passed the order acquitting three accused as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.
