HC stays Savar UP polls 
The High Court on Monday stayed the process for holding the election of Savar Upazila Parishad.
An HC bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice M Faruk passed the order after hearing on a writ petition filed by Kofil Uddin, suspended chairman of the upazila.
Secretary of Local Government Department Division, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka and eight officials of the Election Commission were made respondents at the petition.
Advocate Baset Mazumder stood for the petitioner.

Man jailed for life for murder 
A court in Gazipur yesterday sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment for killing his wife in Kaliakoir upazila of the district three years back.
District and Sessions Judge AKM Enamul Haque pronounced the verdict against Sarbes Ali, 36, a resident of Mouchak Ambagan.

The court also fined the convict Taka 10,000.
According to prosecution story, van puller Sarbes Ali strangulated his wife garment worker Sahida, 30, to death on April 2, 2014 as she refused to give money to her husband. After the incident, Farhad Hossain, uncle of the victim, filed a case with Kaliakoir Police Station.
After investigation, police submitted charge-sheet against Sarbes on July 7 of the same year.
After examining evidences and eight witnesses the court delivered the verdict.

One killed, 10 hurt in Sylhet clash
A man was killed and 10 others were injured in a clash between two rival groups at Paton village under Bianibazar upazila of the district Sunday night.
Officer-in-charge of Bianibazar Thana Chandan Kumar said the clash ensued at night between two groups of the village over a trivial matter.
During the clash, Muhidur Rahman Mintu, 55, son of Sauab Ali of the same village died on the spot, while 10 persons sustained injuries. The injured were sent to Sylhet Osmani medical College Hospital.

Female drug trader jailed 
A court in Rangpur yesterday sentenced a female drug trader to life-term rigorous imprisonment for trafficking contraband phensidyl syrup.
The court also fined Taka 10,000 to Rahima Begum, 45, wife of late Ashraful Islam of village Bishapara under Hakimpur upazila in Dinajpur, in default, to suffer another three-month more in jail. Additional District and Sessions Judge Abu Jafar Mohammad Kamruzzaman announced the verdict. The convict was present on the dock during pronouncement of the verdict.
According to prosecution, police arrested Rahima with 5.60 kilograms of phensidyl syrup from Pirganj bus stand under Pirganj upazila in Rangpur on May 5, 2015.

Assistant Sub-Inspector of Pirganj Police Station Danesh Chandra filed a
case against her on the same day.
Later, Pirganj police station submitted charge-sheet before the court
against the three accused persons after investigation into the case.
After examining the witnesses, the court found her guilty and announced
the verdict against her.
