The general secretary of the ruling Awami League (AL) and a minister in the Sheikh Hasina Cabinet, Obaidul Quader, has offered to provide jobs and money to the leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) to ensure that they stay away from crimes and corruption.
“Don’t get involved in crimes and corruption. Come to me if you need money. When you finish your studies, come to me for jobs,” he said in his address to an extended meeting and workshop for BCL leaders, held at the auditorium of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Quader, who is the road transport and bridges minister, also said: “You (BCL members) should not do anything wrong so that the image of your organisation is ruined.”
He also asked Awami League leaders and ministers not to depend on the BCL to boost their political leverage. “Why should Chhatra League guard your interests? As part of this sick game, why are our student leaders going to the living rooms of local leaders, MPs and ministers?”
Quader also felt that student leaders could do more to combat anti-government propaganda on social media. “Chhatra League has to create Facebook pages to stop the spread of lies in villages and elsewhere,” he added.
Meanwhile, at an ‘iftar party’ programme in the city, the AL general secretary criticised BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for spreading lies against the government before having iftar. “Our leader Sheikh Hasina never criticised anyone before an iftar party, so we should follow her,” he added.
Quader also called upon the party’s leaders and workers not to collect money in the name of holding iftar parties.
