The Election Commission (EC) yesterday sought 10 types of assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), a development partner for Bangladesh, for conducting the 11th parliamentary polls and preparing the EC roadmap in a fair manner. The assistance types include voter list update, different election-related equipment like auto-seals, indelible ink, transparent ballot boxes and modern election booths that can be preserved for future use and training manuals. The EC said that the nature of assistance required would be finalised at a symposium to be held in the last week of July, in the presence of the UNDP, other development partners and stakeholders. “We've chalked out 10
kinds of assistance needed for conducting the 11th general election and the EC roadmap in a fair manner. We’ve placed it today before UNDP representatives,” EC secretary Muhammad Abdullah told reporters after a meeting between the chief election commissioner (CEC) and a UNDP delegation.
The secretary said the commission pointed out several matters to the UNDP delegation to bring in modern measures in the next general elections. “All these matters of assistance would be finalised at a symposium on 27–30 Julywith the UNDP and other stakeholders,” he added.
He said that the EC would hold another meeting with UNDP representatives on 20 June, where various matters would be discussed. He also said the commission discussed the probability of using electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the next general election. It also sought cooperation for the distribution of smart identity cards for new voters in the next five years under the Identification System for Enhancing Access (IDEA) project, which would end this year, he added. “We’ll distribute 93 million smart identity cards. We’ve sought the UNDP’s cooperation for distributing smart NID cards among the remaining 1.2 million voters and new voters for the next five years. The IDEA project will end this year,” he added. The three-member UNDP delegation, led by its country director Sudipto Mukerjee, met CEC Nurul Huda at his office in Election Bhaban in the capital yesterday.
