The Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have arrested a garments factory owner from Roopganj in Narayanganj for his alleged involvement in financing militancy activities. His driver was also arrested in this connection. During a press briefing at the RAB media centre in Karwan Bazar, Mufti Mahmud Khan, director of the legal and media wing of RAB, told reporters that Imran Ahmed (37), the owner of Jim Tex Garments, had been involved in financing the infamous neo-JMB faction known as the "Sarwar-Tamim" group. The elite force raided his house in Mohakhali, but did not find him there. After receiving a tip-off, they arrested Imran from a house in Roopganj along with his driver, Mohammad Shamim, on late Saturday night. Mufti Mahmud said Imran admitted to his involvement with the militant outfit during the preliminary interrogation. Imran is a Majlish-e-Sura member of the Sarwar-Tamim group. He was initiated into the world of militancy by one of his friends in 2012.
When asked about Imran’s level of attachment with militancy, the RAB director said that accused had recently given shelter to Sajid, a noted militant, at his Mohakhali residence. Sajid fled from “Atia Mahal” in Sylhet, where four militants were killed during a four–day operation that officially ended on March 28. Imran is also one of the closest acquaintances of Abu Mugharib, the new emir of the neo-JMB.
The RAB said that apart from Sajid, several other militant leaders had stayed in Imran’s house and received financial assistance from him. Imran also provided Tk. 2 lakh for securing bail for the wife of the militant Abdul Hakim. Abdul Hakim was recently arrested by the RAB. Arms and a huge cache of jihadi books were also recovered from the possession of both Imran and his driver, said the Rab official. Mahmud said the neo-JMB had been giving priority to “dawati” activities. A few days back, a JMB group had held a meeting at Sonatola in Bogra district and formed a 10-member committee for carrying out such activities, he added. He also said Imran was given the responsibility of collecting members for the terror group in Gulshan, Banani and Mirpur areas of Dhaka city.
