The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) will build the third terminal of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) at a cost of Tk 13,610 crore, reports BSS.
After the completion of the terminal, passenger handling capacity of the country’s major airport will increase to 20 from 8 million and cargo handling capacity to 5 from 2 lakh tonnes annually.
The construction work of the new terminal will start in April from the next year and to be completed by April of 2021 with the financial assistance of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
In this regard, an agreement was signed yesterday between CAAB and construction consultancy companies at CAAB headquarters in the capital.
CAAB Chairman Air Vice Marshal Ehsanul Ghoni Chowdhury and Vice Charmin of Japan based Nippon Co Ltd Haruhiko Kanai, Vice Charmin of Japanese Oriental Consultants Ltd Jun Yamauchi, Executive Vice President of Singaporean CPG Consultant Ltd Rohani Binte Baharin and AKM Rafiquddin of Bangladesh Development Design Consultant inked the agreement on behalf of their respective sides.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon was present during the agreement signing ceremony.
The minister said the government has taken the project considering that the numbers of passengers using the HSIA is getting increase day by day.
Mentioning that the heavy flow of cargo has already exceeded the cargo handling capacity of HSIA and the increasing trend of passengers will cross the passengers handling capacity of the airport by 2018, the minister said.
“Considering this, the government has decided to expand the airport capacity,” he said. Menon expressed his gratitude to the Japan government for providing its financial support in building the third terminal.
