Workshop held at National University
National University (NU) Vice-chancellor Professor Dr Harun-or-Rashid on Saturday said Bangladesh has achieved remarkable development in politics overcoming various conflicts since its independence.
“Elected governments have been governing the state since 1991 except the period of political turmoil of 1/11 from 2007 to 2008,” he said, taking part at a daylong workshop on ‘Political Science’ at NU Senate Hall in Gazipur, said a NU press release in the capital.
College Education Development Project (CEDP) organised the workshop for the college teachers. Jahangirnagar University (JU) Government and Politics Department Professor Dr Al-Masud Hasanuzzaman presented a keynote paper on “Political Development in Bangladesh: From 1971 to Present” while Dhaka University (DU) Political Science Department Professor Dr Gobinda Chakrobarthi and Principal Kazi Faruq Ahmed took part in the discussion. The NU vice-chancellor said the crisis over Chittagong Hill Track (CHT) has been resolved in a peaceful way.
Besides, Grabbing state power by General Ziaur Rahman and Hussein Mohammad Ershad was declared illegal by the High Court, election commission was strengthened further and the country's mass media are enjoying more freedom now, he said, adding that all of these indicate political development in the country.
He, however, said the present challenge of political development in Bangladesh is the political leaders' tendency of not accepting defeat in elections.
Post-Graduation Center Dean Professor Dr Md Anwar Hossain presided over the workshop that was attended by, among others, NU Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Md Mashiur Rahman and Treasurer Professor Md Noman Ur Rashid.
A total of 32 college teachers took part in the workshop, the release added.
