Hardly anyone would find cricket as the popular game in England where football dominated like the way subcontinent people worship cricket. But particularly in Cardiff football even takes a backseat as Rugby is the most popular game here. Apart from the experts of Bangladesh, no one is much interested about cricket and honestly don’t know what the cricket is and how it is played.
So however someone will find it surprising when they heard Bangladesh, Bangladesh chanting and that too from the local kids here. Basically on the occasion of ICC Champions Trophy cricket generated some passion as the people now know there is game called cricket. Cricket in fact gives Bangladesh an identity here.
“Yes I know about cricket now. Bangladesh are playing here and I know they love cricket very much like the way we love Rugby,” said Ian Backer, a school going boy from St John’s College, Cardiff.
“It’s the first time I am watching cricket and I love it most. I saw here many Bangladeshi people chanting about Tami, Taskin. They are very vocal and always chanted about Bangladesh, Bangladesh. That’s why I am also shouting Bangladesh, Bangladesh.”
“Honestly I don’t know about much Bangladesh because there are not much Bangladeshi people where I stay.”
Like Ian, many school boys also chanted about Bangladesh and most of them for the first time came to know about cricket.
Bangladeshi people are not that much available in Cardiff like London but still the gallery is dominated by them. Most of the Bangladesh people came here from outside of Cardiff, taking a holiday from their workplace. Even Bangladeshi people from New Zealand, Australia, and USA came here to support Bangladesh, expecting that they would beat New Zealand.
“Regardless of the result, our love for Bangladesh will remain same as it is now,” said Ayahs Rahman, a Bangladeshi housewife coming from Australia with his husband and kids to watch the game.
“Cricket mainly gives us the identity even in Australia. Here I am listening kids are chanting about Bangladesh. So you got it, how cricket unites us. Hope the Bangladesh cricket will win the heart of the people of the world.”
