Three get life term for murder
Sirajganj: A court here on Thursday sentenced three people to life term imprisonment for murdering Nur Mistri in Enayetpur Thana in 2008.
The convicts were Rohij Uddin, 30; Badsa, 35; and Mahbub, 30.
The court also fined the convicted Tk 10,000 each, in default, rigorous imprisonment for six more months.
According to the prosecution, police recovered body of an unidentified person by a swamp, Saindar Bil, at Enayetpur upazila on January 7, 2008.
Union’s chowkidar Dina Chandra Das filed a case against some unknown persons with Enayetpur Police Station. After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet against four people on May 31, 2008.
After examining the records and witnesses, Begum Sheikh Merina Sultana, Additional District and Sessions Judge in Sirajganj, handed down the verdict. Meanwhile, another accused was acquitted as he was found innocent.
Shyamnagar OC, SI sued for alleged extortion   
Satkhira: A case was filed against officer-in-charge of Shyamnagar Police Station, Syed Abdul Mannan and its sub-inspector Liakat on charge of realising extortion from a man for his release from the police custody, reports UNB.
Kabir Hossain Sabuj of Biralaxmi village in Shyamnagar upazila filed the case with Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Thursday.
According to the case statement, SI Liakat detained Kabir Hossain from Nauabeki area and took him to the police station where he beat Sabuj up severely without citing any reason on June 3. OC Syed Abdul Mannan and SI demanded Tk 50,000 from Sabuj for his release. They then took Tk 30,000 cash from Sabuj what he possessed.
Later, Sabuj was released after his family paid Tk 18,000 more on that day. Immediate after release, Sabuj got admitted to a local hospital for treatment.
During filing the case, Sabuj also submitted an audio phone record of the incident to the court as evidence.
Contacted, Shyamnagar OC Syed Abdul Mannan denied the allegation brought against him saying that he did not know anyone named Sabuj.
Minor hacked to death

A minor was hacked to death by criminals at Chitla village in Damurhuda upazila on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Alamin, 12, son of Azibar Rahman of the village. Abu Zihad, officer-in-charge of Damurhuda Police Station, said that victim’s mother Hasina Khatun slept with her three sons at balcony of their house.
When Hasina came outside for answering call of nature, three criminals entered the balcony and hacked Alamin to death. Later, hearing scream of Hasina, villagers rushed to the spot and informed police. Police recovered the body.
Police primarily suspected that the minor might have been killed over either land related dispute or extramarital affairs. Meanwhile, police arrested three people including Hasina from the village.
Construction work of roads, drains inaugurated

Construction work of roads and drains in Chapainawabganj municipality under ‘Urban Governance and Infrastructure Improvement Project’ (UGIIP)-3 was inaugurated yesterday.
Lawmaker of Chapainawabganj sadar constituency Md Abdul Wadud inaugurated the construction work as the chief guest. A function was arranged in Dhaka bus stand area in the municipality on the occasion with Mayor of the municipality Md Nazrul Islam in the chair.
In the first phase, 34 roads covering an area of 19 kilometres and 10 drains covering three kilometres area will be constructed at a cost of Taka 15 crore, he added.
He further added that in the second phase, 31 roads covering the area of 34 kilometres and 25 drains covering 13 kilometres would be constructed at a cost of Taka 26 crore and the construction of the second phase would be completed by June 2018.
