4 killed in ‘gunfights’

Four people, including two leaders of two outlawed parties, were killed in separate incidents of gunfights with police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Naogaon, Chuadanga and Rajbari districts early yesterday, reports UNB.
In Naogaon, two suspected robbers were killed in a reported gunfight between their cohorts and police at Choubaria Haat in Manda upazila early yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Sujon Mia, 42, and Mozammel Haq, 35.
Tipped off, that a gang of robbers were taking preparation to commit robbery in the area, a team of Niamatpur thana and Manda thana police went to the spot, said Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Niamatpur Police Station.
When the robber’s gang was heading toward Choubaria Haat by a truck, a part of the joint team put a barricade on the road to arrest them, he said.
At one stage, the robbers opened fire to police to avoid the arrest by breaking the barricade, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.
Two robbers caught in the line of fire during the gunfight and died on the spot while two others sustained bullet injuries.
Police also arrested two wounded robbers-Imran Hossain and Sohel---from the spot while the others managed to flee the scene, added the OC.
In Chuadanga, a regional leader of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (PBCP) was killed in a ‘shootout’ between his cohorts and the members of Rapid Action

Battalion (Rab) at Khaskarra in Alamdanga upazila early Thursday.
Rab sources said a group of criminals opened fire on a patrol team of Rab while crossing the Khaskarra Bazar, prompting the elite force to fire back around 1:00 am, leading to a gunfight.
After exchange of gunfire for 30 minutes, the Rab members recovered the bullet-hit body of Mohamamd Oltu, 38, son of Jharu Mandal of the village, said Major Monir Ahmed, commanding officer of Jhenidah Rab-6.
The Rab also recovered one shutter gun and four bullets from the spot. Two Rab members were also injured in the gunfight.
Tariqul Islam, additional superintendent of Chuadanga Police (Sadar Circle), said Oltu was wanted in several cases including murder and extortion.
UNB Goalanda Correspondent reports: A regional leader of the outlawed Sarbahara Party (Laal Pataka) was killed in a reported gunfight between their cohorts and police personnel at Char Delundi village of Goalanda upazila early yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Korom Ali, alias Kodom Ali, 38, son of Kobad Ali of Adarsha village of the upazila.
Mirza Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Goalanda Ghat Police Station said tipped-off that a group of outlawed Sarbahara Party (Lal Pataka) was holding a clandestine meeting at Devgram Char Delundi area around 3:00 am, a team of Rajbari Detective Branch (DB) of police conducted a drive in the area.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the outlawed party men opened fire to police members prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.
