Take action against Muhith for breaking commitment: B Chy

UNB

Accusing the Finance Minister of breaking his commitment to reduce VAT and increasing the minimum income tax ceiling, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) president AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury on Thursday urged the Prime Minister to take action against him, reports UNB.
In a statement on the national budget for 2017-18, he said, “The Finance Minister had promised to reduce the VAT and raise the minimum income tax ceiling this time in the national budget. “How did he break the promises? He should think of it.”
B Chowdhury, also a former president, said the Prime Minister should see whether the Finance Minister unintentionally harmed the government and Awami League ahead of the next election by breaking his commitments. "She should intervene in it."
On June 1, Finance Minister AMA Muhith unveiled a Tk 400,226 crore ambitious budget for the next fiscal year (2017-18) with a growth target of 7.4 per cent, expecting to open up a new horizon for Bangladesh through some initiatives ahead of the next general election.
B Chowdhury said though corruption has spread everywhere like virus, no effort is in sight to curb it. “That's why we're spending 8-10 times higher amount of money for the construction one kilometer of road or a bridge than our neighbouring India.”
“The Finance Minister wouldn't have cut pockets of poor and middleclass people had corruption been checked,” he observed. The BDB chief said there is no clear direction in the budget to tackle terrorism and enhance the country's capacity in this regard.
He said only making big allocations for the education sector is not enough for ensuring quality education without arranging proper training for teachers. "There's no benefit for the nation by only raising the rate of so-called educated persons without ensuring the quality."
