The foreign ministry appears to have ‘little’ to do with regard to taking measures against Bangladesh Press Minister at the high commission in London Nadeem Qadir for his ‘professional misconduct’ that ‘embarrassed’ the country, officials told The Independent yesterday.
The United Kingdom Foreign Office summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner in London Nazmul Quaunine to express the British government’s ‘displeasure’ over an article written by Qadir in a Bangladeshi English langue daily, predicting victory of a particular party in the election held yesterday (June 8), said the officials, adding that the daily later withdrew the article.
Things turned so bad that the UK government wanted to declare the Bangladesh press minister as ‘persona non grata’, but at the initiative of the Bangladesh side, the host government refrained from doing so, given the ‘good’ relations between Dhaka and London, they said.
When asked what the foreign ministry is doing regarding Qadir, Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque told The Independent, “We are doing what needs to be done.”
He, however, would not elaborate further.
The PMO has been apprised of the situation and Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim Helal reportedly reprimanded Qadir, said the officials.
When contacted in London, Press Minister Qadir declined to make any comment.
