The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday upheld the stay on the High Court order that granted interim bail to Tangail MP Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in the murder case of Freedom Fighter Faruk Ahmed.
Rana filed a petition with the Appellate Division seeking a ‘review’ of its decision to stay the bail granted by the High Court for four months.
But a three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed ‘no order’ on the petition. During yesterday’s hearing, Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud represented Rana while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state.
Later, the chief law officer of the state told reporters that Rana will stay in jail following the apex court order as it has upheld previous order staying bail to Rana granted by the High Court. On May 8, the Appellate Division extended its stay for four months on a High Court order granting bail to Amanur Rahman Khan Rana in the case.
On April 13, a High Court bench granted bail to the lawmaker in the case.
However, following the government move, the Chamber judge of the Appellate Division had on April 18 stayed the High Court order till May 8.
Faruk Ahmed, a senior Awami League leader and a freedom fighter, was shot dead in Tangail town on January 18, 2013. Rana is a charge-sheeted accused in the case.
When Rana appeared before Tangail additional district and session’s judge court ending his 22-month fugitive run on September 18 last, the court sent him to jail.
