‘Infrastructure development key to attracting foreign investment’

Infrastructure development of a country can play a vital role to attract foreign direct investment (FDI), discussants said at a seminar in the capital yesterday.

Bangladesh is now producing international standard building materials, equipments and innovative technology and the accreditation can play an important role to protect our construction industry, they also said.
“Construction as well as infrastructure development is the key to attract FDI,” said DCCI President Abul Kasem Khan.
"We may have to face industrial disaster due to inefficiency in construction sector including lack of monitoring," DCCI president said adding “We have to develop sustainable and safe infrastructure like roads, rail, expressway, highway, bridge, flyover and housing for our future generation”.
"The government has been implementing a few mega projects in communication infrastructure like Dhaka-Chittagong and Dhaka-Mymensing four lane roads, Padma multipurpose bridge, metro rail, Paira deep sea port," said Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman as the chief gust at the seminar. 
Yeafesh Osman made the remarks while addressing a seminar titled 'Accreditation: Delivering confidence in construction and the built environment' jointly organised by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) and Bangladesh Accreditation Board (BAB) at DCCI auditorium in the capital on the occasion of World Accreditation Day 2017.
Senior Secretary of Ministry of Industries Md Mosharrof Hossain Bhuyian said accreditation or quality assessment will ensure us a sustainable construction, housing and infrastructure development. He said, Ministry of Industries proposed to increase adequate manpower of BAB to make it more efficient and active. He also said that we have to create reliability of our exportable products at home and abroad.
Director General of BAB Abu Abdullah said BAB has given accreditation certificate to 51 different institutions, including laboratory, calibration laboratory, medical testing laboratory, certification body and inspection body.
He said Bangladesh has huge potential for exporting construction materials to the international market. "To use this potential, we need to implement accreditation in construction material sector for safe building and infrastructure. Construction firms, real estate, builders, building materials makers may take accreditation from BAB."
