BNP still has a long way to go

RAFIQUL ISLAM AZAD
BNP still has a long way to go

As part of its reorganisation process, the BNP has so far formed only 50 district committees out of its 77 organisational districts. The party announced most of the committees from Dhaka during the last three years.

At the same time, the party has been unable to hold its workers' conferences in most of the organisational districts due to groupism and internal feuds.
Party leaders, however, alleged that they could not hold worker conferences in many districts as they were not given permission by the administration or police.
Rival BNP groups clashed in different districts over formation of committees by holding council sessions.
Party insiders said out of the 50 committees, over 30 were formed from Dhaka.
BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain admitted that many district committees could not be formed by holding councils due to various reasons. He said no committee has been “imposed” on district leaders and activists.

“The committees have been formed by calling the councillors concerned to Dhaka and in line with their recommendations,” he added.
The senior leader alleged that they were not being given permission to hold councils in many places.
He criticised ruling party leaders for their double standards. He said on the one hand they are saying that the BNP is not holding any council, and, on the other, the administration is not giving permission to hold council sessions.
The BNP leader termed the reorganisation as a continuous process, saying that they are carrying out the activities following democratic and organisational procedures as much as possible in the prevailing situation.
The party’s joint secretary general, Mojibur Rahman Sarwar, also echoed Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain’s words, saying the atmosphere is not congenial to holding councils in many districts, as the administration is not giving them permission.
Referring to obstacles for “iftar mahfil” in many places, Sarwar wondered how the party could hold council in such a situation.
He said the party is trying to form the committees in a democratic manner and in consultation with the leaders concerned. He also said he expects the reorganisation work to continue in full swing after Eid-ul-Fitr.
He, however, admitted that there are problems in some areas and these are being addressed through discussions.
A city leader, preferring anonymity, said it is true that the councils are being hampered for denial of permission. He said the situation has given an opportunity to a section of the leaders to earn money by selecting district committee leaders by sitting in the capital.
The BNP has set several deadlines to complete the reorganisation of district committees, but failed to maintain any of them, according to party sources.
The party set May 7 as the deadline to complete district level conferences, but later extended it till May 15. However, it has not been able to hold conferences in most of the districts till now, the sources added.
