As the south-west monsoon lies in wait to become fully active, heat and humidity is making life difficult during Ramadan.
Rain is likely either today (Thursday) or Friday. It will pave the way for the monsoon to set in, Abdur Rahman, meteorologist at the Dhaka weather office, told The Independent yesterday.
From Thursday onwards, the monsoon system may become active and spread from Dhaka to the central region of the country. This may reduce the heat, Rahman said.
Monsoon arrived in Sylhet, Chittagong, Barisal and Mymensingh divisions in the last week of May, riding piggyback on Cyclone Mora.
The rains will be normal, a meteorologist department forecast for June has predicted. There will be the usual flooding in the country’s north, central and the north-east due to the monsoon rain. It is likely that one or two seasonal low pressures would brew in the Bay of Bengal this month, which may provide muscle to the rains.
Dhaka city passed the 11th day of Ramadan fasting with its usual fare of traffic congestion under 35.2C of maximum temperature. Although it was little less than 35.5C on Tuesday, high humidity and congestion on the streets with a high pollution level made many people miserable.
To compound matters, a nagging water crisis was reported from different parts of the city, including Mohammadpur, Mirpur, Moghbazar and Banshri.
Rahman said the mild heat wave raging over the country’s south-western districts including Khulna, Satkhira and Jessore may start to wane from today.
