Jewellers threaten to go on strike

UNB

Bangladesh Jewellers Samity (Bajus) yesterday threatened to go on an indefinite countrywide strike from Sunday if the gold and diamond ornaments seized from Apan Jewellers are not returned within the next 48 hours, reports UNB.
Bajus Vice-president Enamul Hoque issued the threat at a press briefing at the association's office at Baitul Mukarram Market in the city.
The association also demanded immediate removal of Director General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) Dr Moinul Khan blaming him for a blueprint to destroy the jewellery sector.
Besides, it demanded immediate implementation of the government's announced Gold Policy.
Enamul alleged that the CIID seized the huge gold ornaments from the Apan Jewellers as part of a conspiracy to destroy the country's jewellery business. "A vested quarter has been out to destroy the country's jewellery traders as part of a blueprint to protect the interest of a neighbouring country," he said.
He said Bajus will submit a memorandum to the Finance and Commerce ministries on June 12 while a grand rally will be organised in the capital with the participation of all jewellery traders across the country on June 15 to press for their demand. He also sought Prime Minister's intervention to protect around 28 lakh jewellery traders. Bajus President Gonga Charan Malakar and other leaders of the association were present.
The CIID seized some 498 kg gold and some diamond from different outlets of Apan Jewellers.
