GAIBANDHA: Speakers at a function here yesterday underscored the need for consuming Vitamin A enriched edible oil and iodised salt are vital to enhance disease resistance power in human body, reports BSS.
Lack of Vitamin A in the human body causes many other diseases including night blindness and increases the risk of death in infants and iodine deficiency results in a goiter and causes intellectual disability, they said.
They came up with the comments while addressing a workshop on Universal Salt Iodization and Fortification of Edible Oil with Vitamin A at the conference room of District Collectorate Building here on Tuesday afternoon.
Ministry of Industries, GAIN (Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition) Bangladesh and Consumer Association of Bangladesh (CAB), district committee, arranged the workshop aimed at creating much awareness among the stakeholders.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Goutam Chandra Pal addressed the workshop as the chief guest and superintendent of police (SP) M Masrukur Rahman Khaled and mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah Masud Zahangir Kabir Milon were present at the event as the special guests. With KM Rezaul Haque in the chair, medical officer of civil surgeon office Dr Shihab M Rezwanur Rahman addressed the function as a focal person while Abu Jafor Sabu, secretary of district CAB, was the moderator.
Earlier, the rights of consumers and their responsibility were presented by SM Nazer Hossain, vice president of Central CAB through multimedia projector. Besides, a power point presentation on the necessity of Vitamin A enriched edible oil and iodized salt was done by representative of GAIN Bangladesh Sayeed Muntasir Redwan.
DC Goutam Chandra Pal said every citizen should be aware about the consumers' rights and for this; the rights and the pressure groups of the country would have to come forward with positive attitude and be activated at public interest.
The DC also emphasised for creating much awareness among the people so that they could consume Vitamin A enriched edible oil and iodized salt to keep fit physically and to build healthy nation as well. A total of 60 persons from all walks of life including business leaders, social workers, NGO activists, cultural personalities, and media men took part in the workshop.
