The Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) yesterday called for the National ICT Policy to be changed to the Digital Bangladesh Policy to bring more areas under its purview.
BASIS president Mostafa Jabbar called for the re-naming of the ICT Policy as the Digital Bangladesh Policy.
He was speaking at a seminar—"Upgrading of the National Information and Communication Policy, 2015"—at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre. Elaborating on his proposal, Jabbar said the Digital Bangladesh Policy would bring a host of other existing policies, including the ICT Policy 2015, under one umbrella and help prepare the ground for a true digital revolution in the country. Jabbar also urged for a greater emphasis on the creation of a local software market.
He said the country’s existing software firms could remain occupied for the next 10 years just by meeting local demands. “It doesn’t mean that I'm against exporting software and IT-enabled services. We've a target of earning a billion dollars from software exports within the next two years. But I want to first focus on meeting our local demand with local software,” he explained.
Speaking on the occasion, Junaid Ahmed Palak, state minister for ICT, said that a new policy would soon be placed before the government to bring the education system under a digital framework. “It's necessary to establish a virtual education system and to promote innovation, as traditional job opportunities will be exhausted by 2030,” he added.
Palak agreed with Mostafa Jababr’s proposal, saying that a unified Digital Bangladesh Policy would create a platform for virtual education. To promote Bangladesh to a leadership position in the digital world, the policy will be implemented with a shot-term goal by 2021 and a long-term goal by 2041, he added. The workshop was attended by various stakeholders and government representatives.
