Pineapple brings smile on farmers’ faces in Narsingdi

Farmers of Polash upzila in Narsingdi are happy after pocketing a good profit from bumper yield of Honey Queen variety of pineapple, reports BSS.
A good number of farmers of Rabon, Borabo and Jiardee villages of the upazila have been involved in the farming of Honey Queen variety of pineapple in their radish high land and homestead gardens for long considering its huge profit.Consequently, many farmers have achieved economic self-reliant by cultivating the summer fruits.
Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Latafat Hossain told the BSS that with necessary help and logistic supports were provided to farmers so that they could farm pineapples of their land smoothly.
Honey Queen variety of pineapple is small in size, but it is very tasty with excellent flavour, he said.Some 600 to 700 saplings can be planted on per bigha of land which are producing 1,000 to 1200 pineapples every year.Farmers of the upazila have brought about 10,000 acres of land under pineapple cultivation this year.
Rabindranath, a fortunate farmer of village Raban of the upazila, has changed his life by cultivating Honey Queen variety of pineapple on his land.
Talking to the BSS he said this year he planted 4,000 saplings of pineapple on his five bigas of land which cost only Tk 10,000.
He expressed his satisfaction over the production this year.Harvesting of pineapple began from the 2nd week of Bangle month Jastha.He is hopeful to earn about Tk 1,50,000 by selling pineapple this year.
Like Rabindranath, a number of farmers have also changed their fate by farming pineapple on their land.
