Trees, houses destroyed as tornedo hits Sherpur

More than 200 homesteads were destroyed as a powerful tornado hit the district all of a sudden on Sunday midnight, reports UNB.Witnesses said the tornado hit around 11.30 pm on Saturday at Pakuria, Bajitkhila and Gazir Khamar unions under Sadar upazila and a part of the municipal city, injuring at least 10 people.“The tornado severed power connection across the district since Saturday midnight as trees fell on a 33KV grid line and electric posts at different areas of the district were uprooted,” they added.Witnesses also said many livestock were killed, and trees uprooted by the 30-second tornado. A storm, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds, hit the locality just after the tornado stopped, destroying many more homesteads and livestock, and injuring many villagers.The injured were treated at different clinics and hospitals in the city including Sherpur Zila Hospital.During a spot visit on Sunday morning, this correspondent found that Fakirpara, Sunarpara, Battala, Choitonkhila, Badhapara and some other adjacent villages under Pakuria union were worst affected by the tornado. In this union alone, at least 150 homesteads were destroyed.Pakuria union Chairman Md Hayder Ali said the tornado hit the locality when people were preparing to go to bed on Saturday night. A terrible atmosphere was created as a gusty storm, along with thunderstorms, started ravaging the villages no sooner had the tornado stopped, leaving the people in panic and darkness.“The affected families, losing everything they had, are now living inhuman lives under the open sky.
