College admission results out

95.3pc applicants on first merit list

Over 14 lakh seats to remain vacant even if all successful students get admitted

At least 95.3 per cent applicants have been found eligible for admission to colleges, both government and non-government, according to the first merit list published by the Inter-Education Board Coordination Sub-Committee yesterday. This year over 14 lakh students passed the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent exams under 10 education boards, but the number of seats available in colleges is over 28 lakh.
The first merit list was published a little past 12:00 noon on Monday as per the previous announcement, said Dhaka Education Board college inspector Ashfaqus Salehin.
He also said 12,49,848 applicants, out of 13,09,000, have been selected in the first merit list. The rest of the applicants would be selected in second and third merit lists on June 13 and 18, respectively. The results were published on the website http://www.xiclassadmission.gov.bd/ and the applicants got the results through SMS. Students selected in the first merit list would have to make the primary confirmation of admission for the specific college by sending the board a registration fee of Tk. 185 by June 8, using Teletalk, Surecash or Rocket services.
If any student does not confirm the admission by sending the registration fee, his/her application would be cancelled automatically.
This year 14,31,722 students passed the SSC and equivalent exams. But 1,27,722 of them have not yet applied for college admission. These students will get a chance to apply.
Sources in the Dhaka Education Board said there are 28,62,009 seats in 9,083 colleges, madrasas and technical colleges under the 10 education boards across the country. Even if all 14,31,722 students get admitted to these educational institutions, 14,30,287 seats would still remain vacant.
Under the Dhaka board, there are 5,55,449 seats in 1,236 colleges; under the Comilla board, there are 1,73,060 seats in 381 colleges; in Sylhet, there are 1,23,519 seats in 282 colleges; in Jessore, there are 2,88,537 seats in 578 colleges, in Dinajpur, there are 3,06,620 seats in 663 colleges; in Barisal, there are 3,06,620 seats in 330 colleges; in Rajshahi, there are 3,42,970 seats in 781 colleges, in Chittagong, there are 1,29,070 seats in 239 colleges, under the madrasa board, there are 5,85,900 seats in 2,736 madrasas; and under the technical education board there are 2,18,444 seats in 1,857 technical colleges, Dhaka board sources said.
The sources said if any college authorities fail to admit students, action will be taken against them. “Students generally prefer to get admitted to better colleges. As a result, new colleges fail to attract students. Seats remain vacant and the colleges do not run,” Dhaka Education Board college inspector Ashfaqus Salehin told The Independent yesterday.
He also said that every year registration of some colleges is cancelled for failing to admit students or they are given an ultimatum with another chance. “This year too, we will see which colleges fail to draw students. Measures would be taken against them after considering various matters,” he added.
