Monsoon arrives in Dhaka
Darkness descended early yesterday (Monday), with heavy rolling clouds gathering above. The monsoon arrived in the city with thunder and light showers that gradually turned into a drizzle as the day progressed. The south-west monsoon spread over Dhaka, Barisal and Mymensingh divisions, leaving out Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions. It would cover these two parts of the country in a day or two, fully ushering in the rainy season, the Met Office said. Earlier, the monsoon arrived up to Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, moving from the Andaman Sea, where it was roosting since May 23. Its arrival was accelerated by Cyclone Mora, created by a low pressure in the same area two days later. As the system moved further inland, it brought heavy rain in Feni overnight. Until 6am yesterday, the rainfall recorded was 159mm. Chittagong recorded 75mm. A meagre five mm of rainfall failed to wash away the heat and humid weather in the city. The maximum temperature was 33 degrees Celsius. This, coupled with the relative morning humidity of 88 per cent, made life difficult for the fasting people.
