When it mattered most, opener Soumya Sarkar seemed to have fizzled out. For the consecutive two matches in the ICC Champions Trophy, Soumya was at his shadow just. Even though he made 28 against England in the first match, his struggling against pacer was noticeable clearly as he was beaten repeatedly.
The ugliest part of his innings was he was not comfortably in moving the foot, something that a batsman should possess if he wants to be technically correct. He could amend in the second match but this time too, he was completely out of touch. Paying the price of moving the foot in time, he got a healthy edge through to Mathew Wade off Josh Hazzlewood delivery while trying to push a length ball. But what looked embarrassing was that he was lazy in his approach in a game that is a ‘do or die’ match for Bangladesh. This time in the match he scored just 3.
He was however in great form during the tri-nation series as he scored two consecutive half-century against Ireland and New Zealand before the downfall started in the return leg match against New Zealand in which he was out with naught. Thereafter he didn’t get runs in the two practice matches against Pakistan and India.
Soumya stormed into the limelight with a fearless batting show during the 2105 World Cup. He was then promoted to opening position to partner Tamim and together they paved the platform of some famous victories of Bangladesh.
The honeymoon period was over just one year after he made his debut. He has been a patchy form for long but he was lucky that he never got dropped like the others. He then paid the price in the Tri-nation series but when his service is badly needed, he is out of form again.
Bangladesh meanwhile dropped Mosaddek Hossain Saikat to accommodate Mehedi Hasan Miraj in the side as they went with traditional seven batsmen, four bowlers format in the their crucial match against Australia.
