The National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR) on Monday placed a 10-point recommendation before the government, including adequate measures, to keep journeys safe and smooth on waterways for homebound people ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr, reports UNB.
The committee, in a letter to the Shipping Secretary, conveyed the recommendations that include strengthening mobile-court drives for safe and smooth journeys. It suggested the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to halt the movement of all types of launches having faulty designs, unregistered and the vessels which are not surveyed to verify their fitness.
The committee also sought stern actions through conducting regular drives against those -- drivers, masters and owners -- who will violate rules.
It also sought initiatives to introduce hourly weather updates through loudspeaker in all terminals apart from TV and radio weather bulletin forcing all the vessels to follow the weather forecast and other related directives to avoid any disaster.
The committee also suggested formation of adequate number of mobile courts, stopping the issuance of survey certificates to the date-expired launches 15 days ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr. It also urged the authorities to set up CCTVs in all launch terminals with adequate security forces to ensure safety for homebound passengers. In the letter signed by the committee general secretary Ashis Kumar Dey, the committee urged the relevant authorities to take their recommendations seriously and implement those.
