Captain Mamunul Islam fired home an early goal to take Chittagong Abahani Limited into the final of the Walton Federation Cup Football defeating Rahmatganj MFS by a solitary goal in the first semifinal yesterday at Banganabandhu National Stadium in the capital. It is the first time Chittagong Abahani reached the final of the Federation Cup where, on June 5, they will play against the winners of today’s match between Abahani Limited and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club. The match was off to a good pace from each side, but
Chittagong Abahani remained a bit ahead in ball possessions and also took the early lead. One goal behind, Rahamtganj dominated the full second session, but could not score an equaliser.
The national team’s captain Mamunul, who looks recovered completely from his illness, fired his left footer into the far post in the eighth minute to break the deadlock, when Afeez Oladipo cut back the ball for the unmarked playmaker (1-0).
The title contenders Chittagong Abahani had to deal with a huge contest right from the kick off, as Rahmatganj went into a strong offensive, not to leave any space unchallenged and went close to scoring an equaliser at the margin on the 19th minute.
Rashedul Islam, after receiving a pass in an open space, dribbled past defenders Ashraful Rana and Shusanta Tripura before entering into the box. But the forward made a poor finish when his effort went outside the post being the goalkeeper alone in front of him.
Chittagong Abahani, with the 1-0 first half advantage, began the post lemon session with better pace but could not keep up the tempo for long as Rahmatganj was trying to bounce back strongly and put the title contenders into huge pressure with some strong attacks and also threatened twice on the 68th and 69th minute. But Nigerian forward Ismail Bangoura and local boy Rashedul Shuvo could not mark the target from the box when the former’s attempt was denied by the goalkeeper and the latter just shot the ball straight to keeper Nehal’s.
Rest of the time it was mostly a show of the Old Dhaka outfit, which had clear control in the match and also went closer to score goals but the futile attempts from the forwards disappointed its supporters as they could not bring an equaliser.
