Most of the cyclone shelters are now in dilapidated condition in absence of proper maintenance at disaster-prone coastal villages in Sonagazi upazila of Feni district.
According to the locals, some of these shelters are too risky. The cyclone centres inside the embankment have the capacity of accommodating only 11,000 people against 8 lakh people in the upazila.
With a view to providing accommodation for people in coastal upazila during cyclones and other calamities, the government has constructed 57 cyclone shelters- of them 20 were built in sixties, 37 others in different times. But 14 of them were declared abandoned 20-25 years ago as those turned dilapidated. Besides, two cyclone centres were eroded by the Feni River, said sources.
Mosharof Hossain Milon, union parishad chairman of Char Chandiya said people are to take shelter under the open sky on embankment during stormy weather season due to lack of adequate cyclone centres. He urged the authorities concerned to build new cyclone centres to save lives of coastal people.Explaining the necessity of constructing new cyclone centres for the coastal people, Sonagazi Upazila Chairman ZM Kamrul Anam said they sent letter to the concerned authorities to repair the dilapidated cyclone centres immediately.
