Teacher requests PM to have ‘false’ case withdrawn

Narayanganj teacher Shyamal Kanti Bhakta yesterday requested Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to have the ‘false’ bribery case against him withdrawn. Bhakta, who was humiliated in public in May 2016 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, said this was all part of a conspiracy to oust him from the school and claimed that his life was under threat. Bhakta placed this appeal at a press conference organised by the Bangladesh Jatiya Hindu Mohajote (BJHM) at the Crime Reporters’ Association of Bangladesh in Dhaka.
Bhakta said, “A conspiracy was hatched against me on May 13 last year. I have done a lot for the school (Piyar Sattar Latif High School). I never took part in any misdeed. It was a mistake that I selected the school committee without holding an election. But I did not raise the tuition fees since mostly poor families live in that area. I did not allow anybody to loot the school property.”
He added, “I did not get any whiff of this conspiracy beforehand. It was all pre-planned. I was forced to resign. The only reason behind the conspiracy is that I am a Hindu. I have faced mental torture. My family has been shattered. I don’t know where to go. I am a citizen of this country. How does the question of being a minority arise?”
On July 27 last year, Morsheda Begum, a teacher of Piyar Sattar Latif High School, filed a case against Bhakta, accusing him of taking a bribe in December 2014 by promising her employment under the government’s monthly pay order scheme. Bhakta was sent to jail and later granted bail. This came barely two months after Bhakta was physically assaulted in the presence of local lawmaker Selim Osman. “I am living I fear. Anything can happen anytime,” Bhakta said at the press conference. He sough police security.
He held Osman and the former school committee responsible for hatching the conspiracy against him and demanded the trial of the conspirators. The president and the secretary general of the BJHM, respectively Provash Chandra Roy and Polash Kanti Dey, were present at the briefing.
