BCB director and its game development committee chairman Khaled Mahmud Sujon said that Bangladesh should play at semifinal stage of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales.
“I think we should play at semifinal stage though like others I will say that we have been drawn in the tough group. But I think this is our level,” said Khaled Mahmud.
“You can’t say that the group Sri Lanka, India and Pakistan have been clubbed that’s an easy group. On the other hand, Australia, England and New Zealand are in the group that’s a tough group,” Mahmud told media.
“Actually we’re in a level where we play. Now we’re sixth in rankings. So we’ve to play with the top-level teams. I think there is no chance to show any excuse. We’ve to play with champions. We’ve to play our best cricket. If we could do it, I think, many things will be possible for us,” he added.
Sujon said that if they could play their game as per their game plan they can then beat any team in their day.
“In our day, we can beat any team. We have that ability. It’s not a fluke. By formulating game plan, Bangladesh can beat their opponent side,” the former skipper said.
“We’ll definitely have a plan against England how we can beat them. I think we have to play our best brand of cricket. If we could execute in the field according to our planning I think Bangladesh will have chance to move forward in Champions Trophy,” he also said.
He said that for it they have to bat and bowl well in death over of the match in the showpiece event.
“It seems to me that our death bowling is still a concern for us. Along with that, we needed to improve in the death batting in the last powerplay,” he said, adding “If you mark at the last match, then you will get to see no batsman finish the proceedings. What is Shakib, Mushfiq, Mahmudullah or Mosaddek. If a batsman can finish the innings then the match is good for the team’s success.”
When asked about the loss in warm-up match after being scored near 350 runs, Sujon said that the match scenario would be different if they field their key bowlers-Mustafizur Rahman and Rubel Hossain.
“Warm-up matches are being held to hone skills and techniques of batting, bowling and fielding before going into the main campaign. Mustafiz (ur Rahman) and Rubel Hossain were not in the team. Even Sabbir Rahman has not played. Imrul was played in place of him,” he said
“Along with that, it has been tried by Taskin and Shafiul. Mustafiz is a factor of our bowling. If he could play the match then the match scenario might be different,” he also said.
“I think we’re in right mood. I just talked with the coach. The team is in good mode. Batting is being done well. Bowling has still concern. I think Oval is a very flat wicket. We’ve first match against England, who are considered as the favourite. Overall, England is tough team but we’ve experience to beat them.”
“I think the death bowling is still important for us. Mustafiz plays a key role at that time. Mashrafe have been giving us support since a long year. But I think Rubel can play a key role at death bowling in Champions Trophy. He can bowl accurately. He bowls well at the time of Ireland series. Rubel’s bowling may be important for us in the showpiece event.”
“I’m doubt about 375 at Oval is secured. The Oval is a very very flat deck. We’ve two games at Oval. In given day, the defense is difficult if you do not bowl well. Oval is tough ground for bowlers. But I think our players are in there for the last few days. They will make their habituation very soon. I think we’ll play our best cricket,” he said in response to a query.
