The International Day for United Nations Peacekeepers will be observed in a befitting manner here today (Monday), as in other countries across the world.
The theme of the day this year is ‘Investing in Peace Around the World’.
Different programmes have been taken up in observance of the day, said a press release issued by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) yesterday.
In a statement, UN secretary-general António Guterres said, “On this International Day of UN Peacekeepers, we pay tribute to more than 113,000 ‘Blue Helmets’, UN Police and civilian personnel deployed in 16 missions. We acknowledge the contribution made by an ever-growing number of member states to our operations. Their efforts on behalf of the international community are one of the most concrete expressions of the UN Charter’s determination 'to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war'."
The day's programmes in Bangladesh will begin with a ‘Peace Keepers’ Run’ in the city which state minister for foreign affairs Md Shahriar Alam will attend as the chief guest, the ISPR said. A reception will be organised at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) on May 29 in honour of the close relatives of the deceased and injured Bangladeshi peacekeepers.
President Abdul Hamid will attend the function as the chief guest, the ISPR release added.
A special presentation on different activities of Bangladesh in the UN peacekeeping mission will be made at the BICC in the afternoon.
To observe the day, different mainstream national dailies will publish special supplements and journals highlighting the importance of the day.
Besides, different private television channels, including Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Bangladesh Betar (BB), will air special talk shows on the occasion.
The International Day for UN Peacekeepers is observed on May 29 every year across the world.
The Bangladesh Army started its journey in the UN peacekeeping mission in 1988, with 15 observers in UNIMOG (Iraq-Iran). Since then, it has been maintaining its dominance as a leading troop contributor country in UN peacekeeping. Bangladesh’s armed forces have so far participated in 54 peacekeeping missions in 40 countries.
A total of 1,28,545 members from Bangladesh’s armed forces has participated in the noble task of peacekeeping.
