The reinstallation of the statue of Lady Justice on the premises of the Supreme Court (SC) kicked off a controversy yesterday, with Islamic political parties and organizations threatening to launch a massive movement against the move. The statue of Themis, the Greek goddess of justice, holding a scale and a sword was reinstalled in front of the SC’s annex building early yesterday, three days after it was removed. Protesting against the reinstallation, Allama Shah Ahmed Shafi, ameer of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, yesterday termed it as a “mockery” of the religious beliefs of people, national spirit, and tradition of the country. “We are surprised, stunned and speechless with the news of the reinstallation of the idol of the Greek goddess of justice. It proves that the government does not give any importance to people’s expectations,” he said in statement. Shafi also questioned the justification of the statue’s reinstallation by those “claiming themselves to be modern, progressive and secular”.
Islami Andolon Bangladesh, a major Islamist party led by Charmonai Pir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, has announced to hold a grand rally in Dhaka on the occasion of 17 Ramzan (June 12) in protest against the statue’s reinstallation. The Islamist party will also stage demonstrations at the district level on Friday and at the upazila level on June 11 to demand the statue’s removal. The protest programme was announced by the party’s acting secretary general in a rally in front of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after zuhr prayers yesterday. The party’s student wing, Islami Shasantantra Chhatra Andolon, had organised the rally in protest against the arrest of nine of its activists from a sit-in programme in front of Jatiya Press Club. The activists were protesting against the reinstallation of the statue of Lady Justice.
Also yesterday, a Dhaka court granted bail to four people, who were earlier arrested on charges of attempted murder of policemen while protesting against the removal of the statue of Lady Justice on Thursday.
Those who got bail are Chhatra Union central committee general secretary Liton Nandi, its Dhaka College unit president Morshed Ali, its Lalbagh thana unit organising secretary Al Amin Hossain Joy and Udichi Shilpigosthi leader Arif Noor. The bail orders were passed by metropolitan magistrate AKM Mainuddin Siddique. The work to reinstall the statue had started around 8pm on Saturday and completed around 2am yesterday.
