Youths vow to prevent violence against life, nature

BSS

RAJSHAHI: Taking part in an oath-taking programme here more than 100 youths vowed to prevent violence against life and nature, reports BSS. They also voiced for time-befitting and effective measures to prevent such type of violence for conservation of both biodiversity and life diversity in the region including its drought-prone Barind tract. Diversities are gradually declining due to various natural and manmade catastrophes posing a serious threat to the whole ecosystem. So, there should be a campaign and state level interventions to save diversities, they added unanimously.
Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK) and Barind Education, Culture and Diversity Protection Centre (BECDPC) jointly organised the programme at Barakuthi River bank in the city on Saturday afternoon. “Protect Diversity, Stop Warming and Save Life” was the slogan of the meeting which was organised to mark the closing of weeklong campaign to prevent violence against life and nature in observance of International Life Diversity Day- 2017.
During his concept paper presentation, Jawad Ahmed Rafi, President of BECDPC, mentioned diversity of life, plant and culture has been declining alarmingly due to violence against nature posing a serious threat to public life and overall ecosystem.
Shahidul Islam, Regional Coordinator of BARCIK, addressed the meeting as focal person saying school, college and university level students need proper knowledge about the importance of biodiversity, natural resource conservation and climate change issues so that they can contribute to this field.
To this end, there should be time-befitting measures and institutional learning for them as there is no way but to natural resource conservation in the region to face the adverse impact of climate change for the greater interests of new and future generation.
Due to abnormal declining of natural resources like native crop seeds, fish and birds species and other wildlife, conservation of natural resources has become indispensable for facing the adverse impacts of climate change.
Shahidul Islam opined that many native crops and vegetable varieties are gradually declining.
Many of the native fish species, particularly the small indigenous ones are on the verge of extinction due to various reasons.
