Opener Tamim Iqbal smashed a sublime 102 as Bangladesh racked up a gigantic 341 for nine against Pakistan in their first warm-up game for the ICC Champions Trophy at Edgbaston, Birmingham yesterday.
It was Bangladesh’s highest total in any kind of cricket against any Test nation, a feat that was scripted thanks to the swashbuckling opener who unleashed a powerful shots from his repertoire right from the start of the game.
One side of the ground was smaller in size than the standard stadium which helped Bangladeshi batsman to compound the woe of Pakistani bowlers.
Tamim sent the ball across the rope for nine times in addition of smacking four sixes in his 93 balls knock. The opener who scored two half-centuries in the recently concluded Tri-nation series in Ireland has of late changed his batting style as he let his opening partner Soumya Sarkar take the charge of attacking role. But in yesterday’s game, he started onslaught to make the Pakistan bowlers disarray to keep his side in commanding position.
Soumya was dismissed for 19, but Tamim continued taking the Pakistani attack in disdain. Imrul Kayes who was chosen for batting ahead of Sabbir Rahman, played a perfect foil to him and together they combined for a 142 for the second wicket to pave the platform of a big total.Kayes was removed, playing a 62 ball-61 runs knock with the help of eight boundaries after which Tamim shared another 50-run partnership with Mushfiqur Rahim.
As the partnership looked threatening further, Shadab Khan took out Tamim as he just reached his century. However Tamim’s dismissal brought no respite for the toothless Pakistani attack since they failed to control the other batsmen. With the platform was nicely set, every batsmen went after Pakistani bowlers, showing no mercy. Mushfiqur Rahim was in the fore with hitting three sixes and as many fours in his 46 off 35. But the batsman, whose form is badly needed for Bangladesh ahead of the tournament proper, couldn’t show much promise. As has been the case, Shakib Al Hasan got start as usually but failed to carry on it. This time he made just 23 off 27.
Mahmudullah Riyad who also showed a marauding form in the tri-nation series, continued it, hitting 29 off 24. But it was young Mosaddek Hossain Saikat who literally took Bangladesh on the verge of 350 runs mark, clubbing 15 ball-26 that designed with three fours and one six.Pakistan fast bowler Junaid Khan claimed four but gave away 73 runs in his nine overs. Hasan Ali and Shadab Khan took two wickets apiece.
