BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed yesterday said the Election Commission (EC) should have held dialogues with political parties before announcing its roadmap for the 11th parliamentary polls, reports UNB.
"The Election Commission has rolled out a roadmap. In other words, we can say it's a plan for holding a lopsided election. What's the use of presenting the roadmap if a fair and acceptable election is not held?" he said.
Speaking at a discussion meeting, the BNP leader further said, "They (EC) should have discussed with the political parties before giving the roadmap. They're now saying that they'll hold talks (with political parties)."
Zia Parishad arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club, marking BNP founder Ziaur Rahman's 36th death anniversary.
Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, questioned the neutrality of the current EC, saying it is an unacceptable Commission which acts as per the government's directions.
"The Chief Election Commissioner is a partisan person who was involved with a particularly party. That's why we couldn't accept him. We don't think a credible election is possible under him," the BNP leader observed.
He also said the Election Commission will not be able to work independently if the election is held under a partisan government.
About the next general election, Moudud said their party wants to join the polls to restore people's voting rights. "People won't allow the government to hold one-party polls this time in the country. We'll take part in the polls so that a true representative government can be formed."
