‘List of river grabbers being prepared’

RANGPUR: Chairman of the National River Commission (NRC) and former secretary Atharul Islam has said the list of river grabbers is being prepared to bring them under the law of the land, reports BSS.
“Our river routes was 24 thousand kilometres long during liberation war of our country -----the length of the river has already reduced by 18 thousand kilometres to five to six thousand kilometres now and we will never allow to reduce the length anymore,” he said.
The NRC chairman said this while addressing a discussion as the chief guest held at a local hotel here on Friday afternoon. Manobadhikar and Poribesh Andolan (MAPA) Bangladesh, Riverine People, Solidarity, International Rivers and Blue Planet Initiative jointly organized the discussion styled “Rangpur Division: International Rivers and Life,” a press release issued by Riverine People said.
Associate Professor of Begum Rokeya University (BRU) and Director of the Riverine People Dr Tuhin Wadud presided over the discussion moderated by its Convener of BRU unit Assistant Professor Umar Farooque.
General Secretary of MAPA Bangladesh Dr Abdul Matin, its Organiser Advocate Munir Chowdhury, Secretary General of the Riverine People Sheikh Rokan, Convener of 'Nodi Banchao Andolan' Nazrul Islam Hokkani, addressed as special guests. Executive Director of Solidarity Harun-Ar-Rashid Lal delivered keynote speech narrating the present situation of the common international rivers flowing through Bangladesh.
River researchers Mahbub Siddique, Professor Shah Alam, Dr Mofizul Islam Mantu, freedom fighter Akbar Ali, Professor Mozahar Ali, Principal Fakhrul Anam Benzu, ADC (Revenue) KM Maruf Hasan, River Organiser Shamsul Haque spoke. The environmental and human rights activists, river researchers, academicians, government officials and NGO executives, civil society remembers and riverside people from all over Rangpur region participated.
