The ICC Champions Trophy 2017, which will be played in England from June 1 to 18, will kick-off with the warm-ups prior to the start of the tournament. England and South Africa will be playing a three-match One-Day International (ODI) series ahead of the tournament, and hence will not play any warm-up game. The remaining six teams from the 8-team marquee event will play out two warm-up games each between May 26 and May 30. England and Bangladesh will open the main tournament then, by playing the first game on June 1 at the Kennington Oval, London, according to an ICC press release.
Coming back to the warm-ups, Bangladesh and Pakistan will lock horns at Edgbaston, Birmingham on May 27 with the aim of gaining valuable practice ahead of the tournament. Given the tournament will not be a very long affair, both the teams would want to get acclimatised to the conditions as quickly as possible. Moreover, both the teams will also want to get their combinations right and identify the best possible playing XI before the main round comes calling.
Bangladesh will hold a slight advantage over their Asian counterparts, as they would be coming fresh from a tri-nation series in Ireland, where conditions similar to England are on offer. Pakistan, on the other hand, will be coming from a long and gruelling tour of the West Indies, where playing conditions are drastically different.
The past records usually do not matter in a new tournament, as every match is a fresh beginning. But talking about the head-to-head ODI record between the two teams just for the sake of statistics, Pakistan hold edge over Bangladesh with a superior 31-4 win-loss record. However, Bangladesh have beaten Pakistan in the only ODI these two teams have played on the English soil till date. That match happened to be the historic group stage encounter from the ICC World Cup 1999, where Bangladesh emerged victorious by 62 runs.
Moreover, three of Pakistan’s four losses against Bangladesh have come in last year and a half, which gives a good account of Bangladesh’s rise in ODI cricket. This, however, will be a fresh start, a new beginning, and both teams will start from the same point. A win here will help them to gain momentum in the immensely competitive tournament.
