UNB

An immense shortage of safe water hit the district town due to the continuous fall in underground water level with the advent of dry season, causing sufferings to people, reports UNB.A source from Jessore municipality said pump stations can lift only half of the required amount of water from underground using 25 out of 29 pumps of the area to meet the demand of the town dwellers. The groundwater level has fallen by 36 feet than the static level and it might fall by another two feet, said the sources.A total of 1,65,00,000 liters of water is needed daily for 13,700 water connections in the municipality whereas the authorities can provide only 95,00,000 liters, municipality sources said. The residents of Railgate, Raipara, Dalmil, Chachra intersection, Kharki, Sasthitola, Bejpara, Loan Office Para and Sangkarpur of the municipality are the worst sufferers.Local residents Helena Parvin and Sharmin Aktar said the scarcity of water has been continuing for the last several weeks and the problem is turning acute gradually. The flow of water in taps is regularly slowing down, they said.Meanwhile, many locals have been using submersible pumps without permission form the authorities and using additional motors in the water lines of the municipality, escalating the crisis, said Hafizur Rahman, assistant engineer of Jessore municipality water supply unit. The problem would be resolved after the rise of underground water level by rainfall, he added. However, he also suggested the users to keep the pipes used for water supply iron-free to increase the flow.
