It was after eight days that rain, accompanied by strong winds, occurred in many parts of the country yesterday (Friday). It brought some relief to people suffering under the heat wave raging in Khulna and Barisal divisions and the regions of Faridpur, Madaripur, Rangamati, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni and Pabna. More rain is likely today (Saturday), the Met Office said. Dhaka officially recorded drops of rains in the Agargaon weather office's rain gauge. But some parts of the city had isolated rainfall, after a dust storm whipped up winds with speed reaching 57km per hour at about 5pm.
Although the city temperature declined a bit to 35.4 degrees Celsius, from Thursday's 36.6 degrees C, humidity caused by the presence of clouds made life uneasy on a sultry weekend. But the heat declined later after winds blew across the city. Rajarhat in Kurigram recorded the highest 43mm of showers, Bogra 41mm, Chuadanga 39mm, Badalgachi of Naogaon 34mm, Tetulia 32mm, Tarash 30mm, Dimla 23mm and Dinajpur 22mm.
The highest maximum temperature was recorded in south-western Khulna, sizzling under 37.7 degrees C, followed by 37.6 degrees C and 37.2 degrees C in Satkhira. But a little 13mm of rainfall in Chuadanga kept the maximum temperature at 36.5 degrees C. The Met Office said a low brewing over the south-east Bay of Bengal, combined with a trough of a westerly low, had generated high humidity to produce the rain that may occur again today. There may be more rain in the next five days to wash away the heat, bringing it down in some regions, the forecast for the next 24 hours beginning at 6pm yesterday said.
