CJ not govt removed statue from SC: Moudud

UNB

BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed yesterday said it is Chief Justice (CJ) Surendra Kumar Sinha not the government that removed the statue of Greek goddess from the Supreme Court premises, reports UNB. “The Chief justice in consultation with senior lawyers decided to relocate the statue from the Supreme Court premises.  So, I want to let you know it’s the Chief Justice who removed the statue on his own, not at the government order,” he said. Moudud came up with the remarks while speaking at a discussion arranged by Barkatullah Bulu Mukti Parishad at the Jatiya Press Club, demanding the release of BNP vice chairman Bulu. The BNP leader said SK Sinha had a meeting with senior lawyers, including Dr Kamal Hossain, Amirul Islam, Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, Supreme Court Bar Association president Zainul Abedin, secretary Mahbub Uddin Khokon, its ex-president Khandaker Mahbub Hossain and AJ Mohammad Ali, on Thursday afternoon seeking their opinions on removing the statue. “They (senior lawyers) suggested removing the statue to avoid any controversy, Moudud added.
On Friday midnight, the statue of the Greek goddesses was removed from the Supreme Court premises.
On April 9, 2017, a writ was filed with the High Court, seeking removal of the statue of the statue from the Supreme Court premises.
Besides, Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh on February 11, this year demanded removal of the statue mentioning that there is no such idol in the apex courts of the USA and neighbouring India, and there cannot be an idol in the Supreme Court of a Muslim majority country like Bangladesh.
About the Election Commission’s roadmap for the next general election, Moudud said, “The current Commission is un acceptable one. It’s a Commission subservient to the government, not neutral one. They have formulated the roadmap to hold another one-party election.”
The BNP leader warned that people will not allow the government to hold a lopsided election any more. “All the democratic forces, including BNP, will wage a movement under Khaleda Zia’s leadership to ensure a fair election. There’s no alternative to a movement to restore democracy in the country.”
Criticising the government for raiding their chairperson’s Gulshan office, Moudud said the government has manifested its fascist face with it. He also alleged that Awami League has sent Narayanganj schoolteacher Shyamal Kanti Bhakta to jail in a ‘false’ case as it does the politics of vengeance. The BNP leader also said the government is exposing its weakness by not allowing BNP to hold rallies. “We’ll only inform the administration instead of seeking permission from them to hold rallies in the days to come.”
