The Awami League (AL) general secretary, Obaidul Quader, has said that the party will not renew the membership of "intruders" from other political parties. Calling upon party leaders and workers to remain alert to keep the membership drive above controversy, Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, directed his party colleagues to guard against entry of "parasites" to the AL. “We will have to keep a sharp eye on new membership and renewal of membership to resist outsiders,” he said while handing over membership-collection forms to the AL’s district-level leaders, at Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office, yesterday (Thursday). On May 20, AL president Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the membership drive at an extended meeting at her official residence, Ganabhaban.
From now on, the party’s district unit leaders will carry out the membership drive across the country. About the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the next polls, Quader said it is their very rational and strong demand for using the modern system in the next general election. If this is done, the BNP will not able to raise questions about the polls, he added.
“We don’t want to use the analogue system in the next polls in this digital age. We’ll place our strong logic and demand in favour of EVMs before the Election Commission during its talks with political parties in July,” he said. As his attention was drawn to the BNP’s allegation that the government wants to control the judiciary, the AL leader said it is the BNP that had tried to do this when it was in power.
