The BNP has announced to stage demonstrations across the country today after the party was denied permission to hold a protest rally at Suhrawardy Udyan yesterday.
The protest programme is against the recent police raid at BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office.
Announcing the programme, the second of its kind this week, at the BNP headquarters in the city yesterday, the party's senior joint secretary general, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, said the party will stage demonstrations at city and district levels across the country. In Dhaka, such demonstrations will be organised at the thana level, he added.
The BNP standing committee, the highest policymaking body of the party, had decided to hold the protest rally at Suhrawardy Udyan at a meeting on Sunday.
Accordingly, the party had sought permission from the public works department and Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Later, police informed the party that the ruling Awami League was already scheduled to hold a rally at the same venue on the same day.
