The government yesterday handed out no objection certificates (NOCs) to four companies to purchase energy efficiency machineries worth Tk 397.16 crore from aboard. The interest rate has been fixed at 4 per cent.
The move is part of the government’s initiative to promote energy efficiency in the industry, building and household sectors, as well as to raise awareness on the benefits of saving energy.
Among the four companies, Meghna Cement Mills Ltd received an NOC for Tk 127 crore, BEXIMCO for Tk 110 crore, Preety Eco Apparels Village Ltd for Tk 84.4 core and Tithi Textile Mills Ltd for Tk 57.76 crore. Nasrul Hamid, state minister for power, energy and mineral resources, handed over the NOCs to the companies at a ceremony titled “Energy Efficiency and Conservation Project Promotion Financing Program”. It was organised by the Sustainable and Renewable Energy Development Authority (SREDA) at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the city.
BEXIMCO chairman Sohail F Rahman received the NOC for his business conglomerate.
Delivering the welcome speech, Siddique Zobair, member of energy efficiency and conservation of the SREDA, said the promotion of energy efficiency was the best way to ensure stable power supply.
“There are three projects components—commercial sector, building sector and residential sector—for energy efficiency. The commercial sector pertains to industrial purposes, the building to offices and residential buildings, and the residential sector to efficient home appliances,” he added.
Zobair expressed gratitude to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for funding the projects. He said the Japanese government has extended a concession loan of up to 11,988 million Yen (Tk 857.14 crore) to the Bangladesh government to promote energy efficiency in the country.
The aim is to make the funds available, through the governmental financial institutions IDCOL and BIFFL, for factories and facilities that can promote energy efficiency and conservation. Speaking as chief guest, Nasrul Hamid said: “According to the global energy trend, which is significantly moving towards renewable energy, we want more small-size sustainable programmes, such as street lighting and solar system, at upazila and union levels.”
“We have formed a research council cell to innovate and promote renewable and energy-efficient power projects. We will soon become a big player in the renewable energy sector,” he added.
SREDA chairman Helal Uddin said the government was aiming to achieve 15 per cent energy efficiency by 2021.
He also thanked JICA for promoting the projects that will be used to produce sustainable energy resources.
