Police arrested 26 students of Barisal Polytechnic Institute yesterday afternoon for allegedly torturing a student on the campus.
Md Asaduzaman, assistant commissioner of Barisal model kotwali thana, said they were informed that a group of students detained Deep Kumar Saha, a seven semester student of electronic department, yesterday morning and were torturing him on a campus hall no-501. Police conducted a raid on the campus and rescued the victim student but seeing the police, the alleged students thrown bricks on them. At one stage police charge batons and rescued the student from the hall.
Police and victim sources said Deep Kumar Saha came Barisal from Dhaka yesterday morning to attend a scheduled examination.
But one Md Fahim and his associates detained Deep Kumar from Nathullabad Bus stand area of the city yesterday locked him at room no.501 of the west hall.
They tortured him and demanded Tk 50,000 as ransom and threatened to kill. Getting information police rushed to the spot at 3.30pm.
During the police raid, the alleged students attacked police. Later, police rescued the injured Deep Kumar and recovered local arms and drugs and arrested 26 students from the spot. During the raid, a police constable Habibur Rahman also received injuries and was admitted to Barisal divisional police hospital.
Additional police have been deployed on the campus. High police officials visited the spot. Police filed a case in this connection, said police source.
