Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said that it was going to ensure tight security measures to ensure that the city dwellers could shop, commute and move about freely in the upcoming holy month of Ramadan and celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.
First of all, security measures during the Ramadan are boosted almost every year, but given the rise in increased number of hijackers and innovative techniques applied for mugging and robbing, the need for tighter security is becoming the need of the minute. While briefing reporters on the Ramadan security issue at the DMP Headquarters on Monday, the DMP commissioner stated that plainclothes police will be deployed on all important city points including shopping malls coupled with the regular police in uniform in order to ensure foolproof security. Adequate number of policemen will be stationed at every shopping mall.
We, however, take his last words with a pinch of salt. Since comparing the size of our metropolitan police force, the numbers of shopping malls in Dhaka have grown at a disproportionate rate. That said; shop and mall owners should all collectively remain vigilant during the festive season. If necessary, the possibility for recruiting volunteers can be explored. Moreover, we expect the DMP to bring all shopping malls under the scanner by installing CC cameras for round the clock monitoring.
Not to forget, that unlike previous Ramadans and Eid festivals, now we have an added looming threat of militant attacks, so the law enforcing agency’s anti-terror squads too should be watchful for deterring such noxious onslaughts. Surveillance of intelligence agencies and police patrolling should stretch as far as bus and launch terminals and train stations. More than any time before, we want our highway police to run the extra mile for ensuring safe and secured travelling of the passengers.
After about three weeks of the fasting, the homebound people will flock to the railway stations, bus and launch terminals. Ensuring free and safe movement of them has always proved to be a gigantic task and it is expected that this year law enforcers would be able create a better environment on their way to home.
In all this, the willing participation of all citizens is very vital as they need to cooperate with our law enforcement agencies in all capacities for making the forthcoming Ramadan and Eid much safer, secure and joyous.
