RAJSHAHI: Concerted efforts of all government, non-government and research organizations concerned should come forward and work together to protect the existing life and nature in Barind from further degradation, said development activists at a post-rally street corner meeting, reports BSS. They voiced for time-befitting and effective measures to prevent violence against life and nature for conservation of both biodiversity and cultural diversity.
Bangladesh Resource Centre for Indigenous Knowledge (BARCIK) and Barind Education, Culture and Diversity Protection Centre (BECDPC) jointly organised the meeting at Shaheb Bazar Zero Point in the city Monday.
“Protect Diversity, Stop Warming and Save Life” was the slogan of the meeting which was organized in observance of International Life Diversity Day- 2017.
BARCIK Coordinator Pavel Partha addressed the meeting as focal person saying that the diversities are gradually declining due to various natural and manmade catastrophes posing a serious threat to the whole ecosystem. So, there should be a campaign and state level interventions to save diversities.
Barind Region Coordinator Shahidul Islam, Programme Officer Jahid Ali, Agriculturist Amrita Kumar Sarker, Researcher Ismat Zerin and President of BECDPC Jawad Ahmed Rafi also spoke.
Pavel Partha mentioned diversity of life, plant and culture has been declining alarmingly due to violence against nature posing a serious threat to public life and overall ecosystem.
In the wake of abnormal declining of natural resources like native crop seeds, fish and birds species and other wildlife, conservation of natural resources has become indispensable for facing the adverse impacts of climate change.
Agriculturist Amrita Kumar Sarker opined that many native crops and vegetable varieties are gradually declining. Many of the native fish species, particularly the small indigenous ones, are on the verge of extinction due to various reasons.Expressing his grave concern over the issue, he said importance should be given to capacity building to address climate change and for conservation of drought tolerant species.
