BNP ‘awaits’ nod for rally

The BNP did not get permission, till yesterday evening, to hold its proposed rally today at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital protesting the police search in party Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office. When contacted, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir yesterday confirmed that they were not given permission by the authorities concerned till 8:15pm yesterday. He said that they want to hold the rally peacefully and expect that the authorities concerned would give them the permission. Mirza Fakhrul, however, said that if they were not allowed to hold the rally today, they would
announce the next course of action through a press conference on the same day.
Earlier, a two-member delegation led by BNP chairperson's adviser Abul khair Bhuiyan went to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) headqaurters to enquire about their request for police permission for the rally.
Bhuiyan told The independent yesterday that they could not meet the DMP Commissioner but submitted a fresh application to the DMP office for police permission to hold the rally today.
"We have informed the concerned official that we have full preparation to hold the rally if we are given the permission by tonight," he said. The BNP standing committee, at an urgent meeting on Sunday, decided to hold a protest rally at Suhrawardy Udyan today protesting the police search.
Earlier on Saturday, police conducted search operation at BNP chairperson's Gulshan office but came out of the office empty handed.
