Civil society members at a human chain in Rajshahi yesterday demanded for imposing 70 per cent flat tax rates on all tobacco products by cancelling the prevailing slab-based system to discourage consumption of the same, reports BSS.
They forwarded the demand in the programme organised by Association for Community Development (ACD), a human rights organisation, at Jalalhat Pakarmour point in Haragachh pourashava town under Kawnia upazila in the district.
A large number of the civil society members, religious and community leaders, students, teachers, youths, professionals, socio-cultural and anti-tobacco activists participated in the programme. With local businessman Azizul Islam in the chair, social worker Selim Mian, physician Dr Md Yusuf Ali, Imam Moulana Motahar Hossain, Community Mobiliser of ACD Mozahedul Islam addressed the programme, among others.
Project Coordinator of ACD Ehsanul Haque Emon narrated the catastrophic impacts and health hazards from consumption of tobacco products those are being sold at the cheapest rates in the country.
Citing the latest survey reports of the University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, Emon said about one lakh people are embracing death annually from tobacco-attributable diseases in Bangladesh. "Because of lower price of tobacco products and evasion of taxes by the tobacco companies taking the advantage of slab-based taxation system, the nation also looses huge revenue annually," he said.

The government is planning to reshuffle the supplementary duty (SD) on some sectors, including tobacco, mobile services and reconditioned cars, and the value-added tax (VAT), in the new relevant law.…
