The family members of a visually impaired man who died falling into an open manhole in the capital, has received Tk 50 lakh in compensation from the Dhaka Wasa and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), reports UNB. Talking to reporters, deputy attorney general Taposh Kumar said Dhaka Wasa informed the court today (Sunday) that they have provided the Tk 25 lakh to the family members while DSCC had already informed the court last week that it had done the same.
On the evening of March 6, Shanu Miah, 50, died after falling into an open manhole on Culvert Road in the city's Paltan area. On March 7, the High Court summoned the managing director of Dhaka Wasa and chief executive officer of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) to appear before it in connection with the death. It also asked the authorities concerned to file a case against six officials of the WASA and DSCC.
The HC also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why action should not be taken against those responsible for the death and why compensation should not be paid to the family members of the deceased. Later, both organisations filed an appeal challenging the HC order.
On March 30, the Appellate Division of the SC cancelled the order of the HC that asked to file a case against the six officials and asked the WASA and DSCC to cough up compensation to the tune of Tk 25 lakh each.
