RAJSHAHI:Time has come to make the best uses of the 'Ekti Bari, Ekti Khamar (One Homestead, One Farm)' project towards reviving the lost glory of the sericulture sector for strengthening the agro-based economy of the region, reprots BSS. The 'Ekti Bari, Ekti Khamar' project could be effective means of revitalize the silk sector as it is now facing an embarrassing situation due to various reasons.
The government has taken the project to help stimulate rural economy for improving living standard of the people. All officials concerned to work for successful implementation of both the projects to make a dent in the labyrinth of poverty by infusing dynamism into the rural economy.
The observations came at the closing session of a five-day training workshop styled "Silk Production and Development" held in the conference hall of Paba Upazila Parishad in the district on Saturday afternoon.
Upazila administration and its 'Ekti Bari, Ekti Khamar project' and Integrated project for Sericulture Extension and Development in Bangladesh jointly organized the training with financial support from Pally Sanchoy Bank.
Twenty-five beneficiaries of the project joined the workshop. Secretary of Bangladesh Silk Development Board Jahidul Islam and deputy director of Regional Sericulture Extension Officer Selim Hassan addressed the session as chief and special guests respectively with Upazila Nirbahi Officer Selim Hossain in the chair.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Monjure Mawla, Sericulture Extension Officer Alauddin Mondal and coordinator of Pally Sanchoy Bank Soheli Yeasmin also spoke.
The speakers said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working relentlessly for building an economically self-reliant Bangladesh. So, all the field level officials and others concerned should seize all the existing potentialities to supplement the government endeavor.
Chief guest Jahidul Islam said the sericulture together with its industrial side involves a huge number of people who depend on agriculture as an agro- based and labour-intensive industry. Both men and women, irrespective of age, could be used in the silk cultivation side by side with the manufacturing part. Besides, silk cocoon and raw silk have been adjudged as cash crop like other agricultural crops and cereals, he added. He told the audience that if all the beneficiaries of the 'Ekti Bari, Ekti Khamar' project are incorporated in the field level sericulture activities the lost glory of it could be revived and there is no doubt about it.
