Five suspected militants surrendered to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Narsingdi yesterday morning, ending an over 18-hour operation without a gunshot being fired. Personnel from RAB-11 had laid siege to a house at Uttarpara in Narsingdi’s Gabtali area since 4pm on Saturday. Finally, at 10.30am yesterday, five persons holed up inside the suspected militant den walked out to the waiting forces after their relatives contacted them over cell-phones and convinced them to surrender. They were then whisked away to the RAB-11 headquarters in Narayanganj for interrogation. The five persons, who claimed themselves to be students, were identified as Abu Zafar, Masudur Rahman, Mashiur Rahman, Bashirul Islam and Salahuddin. Director of the RAB’s media and legal wing, Commander Mufti Mahmud, told reporters that Salahuddin had links with militants who were earlier arrested from Atia Mahal in Sylhet. This had come to light following the interrogation of the Sylhet militants, the RAB official added.
Based on the inputs from the interrogation and other “dependable information”, surveillance was mounted on the suspected militant hideout in Narsingdi, Mahmud said. He said RAB forces had searched a room of the house, but no guns or explosives were found in it. “Two more rooms were found under lock and key. They would be searched later on,” he added. The RAB spokesperson said they will also investigate the possible militant links of the house-owner, Moinuddin Ahmed, who lives in Dubai, and his brother and caretaker of the house, Zakaria. He said the media would be informed about all the findings following the investigation. Law enforcement sources said Abu Zafar was a student of Narsingdi College and hailed from Char Bhasania village in Narsingdi Sadar upazila. Bashirul Islam was also a student of the same college and hailed from Araihazar in Narayanganj.
